Current Research Area

My research interest is on understanding how commensal microbiota on the female genital tract (FGT) modulate immune responses and influences susceptibility to sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV. I am particularly interested in investigating how alterations in microbial community composition contribute to genital inflammation, mucosal barrier integrity and increased risk of STI acquisition. My main objective is to identify microbial and immunological factors that promote a healthy genital tract environment and reduce the burden of STI-associated reproductive health complications.

Future Career Aspirations

My career aspiration is to complete my PhD in medical microbiology and immunology. I want to become a scientist specialising in female genital tract health and infectious diseases through research. I aim to lead research that improve our understanding of the interactions between the genital tract microbiome, inflammation, and susceptibility to STIs and HIV. I also aim to contribute to the development of interventions that promote a healthy genital tract environment, reduce infection risk, and improve reproductive health outcomes for women, particularly in South Africa and other high-burden areas.
