CAPRISA stands by our commitment to protecting the safety and well-being of the public, guided by factual and scientific-led evidence. 

Professor Salim Abdool Karim, the Director of the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA), has been a victim of misleading adverts. These range from using his image on various social media sites to promote purported health products and their alleged benefits and misinformation on COVID-19 vaccines. Abdool Karim wishes to reiterate that COVID-19 vaccines are indeed safe. Neither Professor Salim Abdool Karim nor CAPRISA endorse any medicines for any company.

In instances where such incidents of disinformation does emerge, CAPRISA urges members of the public to follow these steps:

  1. Verify all health claims and products through SAHPRA, the Nattional Health Department or with your trusted registered healthcare professional. All health claims linked to CAPRISA may be directed to the organisation directly via our website.
  2. Refrain from sharing this disinformation either through the social media platforms or online messaging platforms such as WhatsApp. What if you are sent a message in a chat group or privately? You are advised to delete it immediately. 
  3. Report it as fake immediately. How? Directly to the hosting social media platform ie X, Facebook, TikTok etc.
