Safura Abdool Karim

Safura Abdool Karim, LLB, LLM, PhD is a senior scientist and public health lawyer at the Center for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA). Her research focuses on using law to improve health outcomes across the topics of pandemic preparedness, commercial determinants of health, public health ethics and health systems. Her research interests include obesity prevention, public health nutrition, corporate political activity, evaluation of laws and the development and modification of methods to measure and evaluate legal interventions.  Safura’s scholarship focuses on the right to public health and the integration of solidarity in global health law.

Safura is an adjunct assistant professor at the Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University, a research associate at the EthicsLab, University of Cape Town and the Ethox Centre, Oxford University and a practising advocate at the Johannesburg Society of Advocates. She is also a member of the South African Young Academy of Science. Safura leads public health law research at CAPRISA and is the principal investigator of the NIHR Global Advanced Award “Piloting Integrated Legal epidemiology for Legal And Response readiness” (PILLAR), a study to develop and pilot a new comprehensive method for evaluating the use of law in pandemic responses.
