Prof Norbert Ndjeka serves as the Chief Director TB Control and Management, under the National Department of Health in South Africa as from February 2022. He previously served as the Director, Drug-Resistant TB, TB & HIV between 2009 and 2021. Under his leadership, there has been a decline in the number of cases of DR -TB in South Africa and a remarkable improvement in proportion of patients successfully treated for DR- TB.
Before moving to the National Department of health he served as Medical Officer Senior Medical Superintendent in various hospitals in Limpopo province and Senior Lecturer in Family Medicine at the Medical University of Southern Africa (MEDUNSA) between 1991 and 2007. He served as the MDR-TB & Infection Control Adviser for the University Research Corporation (URC) during the year 2008.
He is registered with HPCSA as a Specialist Family Physician with an interest in TB and HIV. He has authored numerous papers in peer-reviewed journals.
He is currently the Chairperson of the Afro-GLC (African Green Light Committee) and the Chair of SADC END TB Committee (SETC).
He obtained a MBChB degree from the University of Kinshasa (DRC), a diploma in health services management (University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg), a diploma in HIV management from the College of Medicine of SA, a Master of MMed degree in Family Medicine (Medical University of Southern Africa, MEDUNSA in Pretoria) and a DSc (h.c.) from UCT in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the fight against DR-TB locally and globally.
He served as a Principal Investigator for the Bedaquiline Clinical Access Programme (BCAP), the Delamanid Clinal Access Programme (DCAP) and the BPaL Clinical Access Programme (BPaL CAP) in South Africa. He has conducted TB trainings and several TB programme evaluations in the Afro region of WHO.
He is a PhD Candidate at UKZN. Title of his study: Analysis of Determinants of Rifampicin-Resistant Tuberculosis Treatments Outcomes in South Africa.
He serves as an Honorary Associate Professor of Medicine, University of Cape Town.
