Dr Joshua Karaunakaram (MBChB) is a medical doctor and is currently completing his internship at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital. He is a peer mentor and academic mentor at Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine at the University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN). He is also involved in the UKZN young doctor’s mentorship committee and an intern representative at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital.
Dr Karaunakaram joined the CAPRISA Research Placements Programme in 2014 to create an awareness and understanding around HIV/Aids and Tuberculosis. He shares CAPRISA’s goal of local and global research that “contributes to understanding HIV pathogenesis, prevention and epidemiology as well as the links between tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS care.” He also strongly believes that research is the fundamental key to expanding the knowledge base and ameliorating prevention and intervention strategies.
“Through working with experienced researchers in HIV/AIDS and TB, CAPRISA has allowed me to develop skills and expertise in the research environment. The Research Placement Programmes ignites a flame from within, helps strengthen our science base and ultimately invests in the next generation of Scientists.”
