Dr Kumeren Govender

Dr Kumeren Govender obtained his MBChB Cum Laude and his master’s in health sciences simultaneously on a special dual-track programme at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He worked as a medical doctor at the New Somerset Hospital, Cape Town. Govender hopes to bridge knowledge from developed worlds to developing worlds and contribute to pioneering innovative and interdisciplinary solutions that are globally relevant to ultimately improve the lives of those burdened by diseases.

He is a Rhodes Scholar and currently reading toward a DPhil in Clinical Medicine based at the Modernising Medical Microbiology laboratory and focuses on infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance. His interests include direct-from-sample sequencing using real-time technology.

Kumeren is a member of Balliol College, Oxford and is also working as a Junior Dean at Linacre College, Oxford, and a Member of the Royal College of Physicians (Part I/II).

"My experience at CAPRISA has been phenomenal and has allowed me to engage in world-class science and research that has a real impact since beginning medical school which is an extremely rare opportunity to have. Professors Quarraisha and Salim Abdool Karim have been extremely supportive and inspirational, and I can't thank them enough for all they have done."
