The Training Programme at CAPRISA aims to strengthen the science base for HIV/AIDs research in South Africa by offering two avenues to students and graduates to participate in the programme. The CAPRISA fellowship programme and the Clinical Research Placement Programme.
This comprehensive training programme has created a critical mass of trainees at CAPRISA which has enabled the establishment of excellent peer-support and an intellectually richer training experience. Since the inception of the programme in 2003, 702 students have participated in the fellowship programme and 792 clinician students in the Research placement programme.
Students at pre-doctoral and post-doctoral level, including medical students from the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine, students from a number of Schools at UKZN and international fellows participate in the programme.
The Fellowship Programme was established with the aim of developing the next generation of South African and more broadly, African scientists and providing an opportunity for international students from partnering institutions to join this flagship programme.
The CAPRISA Fellowship Programme aims to attract students with an excellent academic track record and a strong interest in Health Sciences, Public Health and Medicine with special emphasis in HIV/AIDS and TB research.

Research Placement Programme
This placement programme is reserved for medical students (MBChB), registered with the University of KwaZulu-Natal and have a strong interest in clinical research.

CAPRISA’s training programme aims to strengthen the science base for HIV and AIDS and tuberculosis research in South Africa and Africa. We invest in human capital development through the CAPRISA Training programme aimed at medical students and graduates who wish to pursue a scientific career and study towards masters, PhD’s and post doc degrees in a robust research environment.
CAPRISA Clinical Trials Capacity Building Programme
CAPRISA invites graduates to be part of a dynamic and diverse research with opportunities to collaborate with leading South African and International AIDS scientists conducting cutting-edge research.
CAPRISA is seeking to offer a 12-month training opportunity in conducting clinical/medical research in HIV/AIDS, TB, and COVID-19. The training program is structured to bring out the very best in each successful candidate and an opportunity to excel in clinical/medical research.

Pre-doctoral and Post-Doctoral Fellowships
International students aspiring to visit the country and pursue higher education or fellowship to enter South Africa; however they are required to provide a valid certificate of a negative COVID-19 test, recognised by the World Health Organization, which was obtained not more than 72 hours before the date of travel.
If you are not from South Africa and are interested in applying for the Fellowship Programme, you will need to find which VISA you must apply for and ensure that you are aware of travel restrictions and requirements due to COVID. CLICK HERE FOR MORE DETAILS.
You will also need to visit the South African Embassy in your country as they may require additional information.
