The CAPRISA Fellowship Programme was set up with the overall aim of contributing to developing the next generation of local South African and more broadly, African scientists. This Fellowship Programme encompasses a range of fellows including medical students from the Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine as well students from a number of Schools at UKZN participating in research placements and long term traineeships at pre-doctoral and post-doctoral level. International trainees include pre-doctoral Fogarty International Clinical Research fellowships, Global Health Programme Masters students from Columbia University, and Doris Duke pre-doctoral Fellows as well as self-funded and WHO funded trainees. This comprehensive training programme which includes over 20 trainees at any one time, has created a critical mass of trainees at CAPRISA which has enabled the establishment of excellent peer-support and an intellectually richer training experience.

CAPRISA’s training programme aims to strengthen the science base for HIV and AIDS and tuberculosis research in South Africa and Africa. We invest in human capital development through the CAPRISA Training programme aimed at medical students and graduates who wish to pursue a scientific career and study towards masters, PhD’s and post doc degrees in a robust research environment.

The CAPRISA Research Placement Programme is aimed to provide medical students with an opportunity to develop skills and expertise in a research environment and to motivate them to become involved in HIV/AIDS and TB research.
