Dr Zweli L Mkhize
Provincial Premier - KwaZulu Natal 


Dr Zweli Lawrence Mkhize was born at Willowfountain near Pietermaritzburg on 2nd February 1956. He was educated at Willowfontein Primary School, Sobantu Secondary School and Dlangezwa High School at Empangeni before obtaining his MB CHB degree from the University of Natal in 1982. In 1983 he did his internship at McCords Hospital before working at Edendale Hospital in 1984 and 1985. In 1986 he lift the country for political reasons and went to Swaziland where he worked at the Mbabane Clinic. In 1989 he proceeded to Zimbabwe where he served in Harare Central Hospital as Casualty Officer. In 1991 he returned to South Africa and worked at the Themba Hospital near White River in teh Eastern Transvaal. In July 1991 he went into private practice in Pietermaritzburg.

 

   Dr Mkhize is chairman of the Willowfontein Community Committee which is responsible for development in the area. He has been a member of the ANC Natal Midlands Region Executive Committee, Serving as the Regional Treasurer from 1991 - 1994 and he now holds the post of ANC KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Treasurer. He was a member of the ANC policy making National Health Secretariat from 1991 - 1994 and was also the co-chairman and a founder of the Regional Health Forum and and member of the National Health Forum which were set up as a consultative forum of regional and national role-players in health, during the transistion. In April 1994 he was elected into the Provincial Legislature of KwaZulu-Natal and awarded the Health Portfolio. He is married to Dr May Mashego and they have two daughters and a son.
