vulindlelaFirst Anniversary of CAPRISA 004 Microbicide Trial at Vulindlela. Over 300 participants of CAPRISA 004 microbicide trial gathered on a beautiful sunny winter’s day of Friday 13th June, to celebrate the 1st Anniversary of this study in Vulindlela.

Fun activities were organized, including a quiz which both rewarded correct answers with prizes of caps and red ribbons but simultaneously reinforced participant knowledge of the trial.

From humble beginnings with its first participant enrolled on the 29th May 2007, the CAPRISA 004 study has grown to 458 participants in Vulindlela this month. The theme for the day was “Freedom from HIV” as a number of study participants are young women from the community, the age and sex group in South Africa most affected by HIV. Activities were coordinated by Muke Mlotshwa, (Principal Research Nurse) and Fanele Ntombela (Recruitment and Retention Research Assistant). Participants were thanked and acknowledged for choosing to make a difference in the HIV epidemic.

CAPRISA staff took the opportunity to stress to participants the importance of ensuring they maintain monthly study visits, ensure they do not run out of gel and especially that they do not co-enroll in other studies. On Wednesday 28th May the CAPRISA 004 Microbicide study at Vulindlela was shown on TV with a documentary on SABC. It included interviews with both Rev. Sithole of Vulindlela and study participants. The interviews were encouraging in that it demonstrated, study participants were well versed about the study and protecting themselves from HIV. Mrs. Lucky Maphumulo, (a CAPRISA  Community Research Support Group member) presented certificates titled “For the contribution of your precious time and effort in the fight against HIV AIDS in Vulindlela South Africa” to all study participants. Certificates were signed by the reverend and also by the study Co-Principal Investigator Professor Quarraisha Abdool Karim. The ceremony closed with dancing, music and refreshments enjoyed by all.
