Research Units

  • Tuberculosis Treatment Consortium:
This US Centre for Disease Control (CDC) funded TB treatment trials unit aims to establish state of the art management of Tuberculosis (TB), the conduct of innovative programs, and the development of educational and training tools. CAPRISA has recently been funded for a TBTC unit which includes the Prince Cyril Zulu Chest Clinic and King George V Hospital, which serves as a referral centre for hospitalization of TB patients. The CAPRISA TBTC will be conducting a TB therapy trial to determine whether adding a quinolone to current treatment regimens can reduce treatment duration to 4 months.

  • Adult AIDS Clinical Trials Group:
This is a multicenter, collaborative clinical trials organization dedicated to the development and execution of a broad therapeutic research agenda directed at eliminating the morbidity and mortality associated with HIV-1 infection. The NIH funds granted to the CAPRISA AACTG unit provides resources to develop both investigational and clinical expertise, research and clinical infrastructure and collaborations that otherwise would not have been available, thus providing broad access to high quality research and expanding access to expert HIV clinical care. An AACTG unit, which is part of CAPRISA, has been funded at the University of Natal / King Edward VIII Hospital and will be conducting ACTG 5175, a trial of HAART regimens.
