CAPRISA is closely linked to other research and training activities, which are not part of CAPRISA but are associated with
CAPRISA in various ways. These include:
- Project Accept
Achieving important and meaningful reductions in HIV-1
incidence in countries hit hard by the HIV/AIDS epidemic requires evidence-based approaches to prevention that mobilize entire
communities towards safety. In this prevention trial, 32 communities in Africa (Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and South Africa) and 14
communities in Thailand will be randomized to either a community-based HIV voluntary counseling and testing (CBVCT) intervention
or standard clinic-based VCT (SCVT). The CBVCT has three major strategies:
- to make VCT more available in community settings;
- to engage the community through outreach; and
- to provide post-test support.
These three strategies are designed to change
community norms and reduce risk for HIV infection among all community members, irrespective of whether they participate directly in
the intervention. The project is being led by Dr Tom Coates from the University of California at Los Angeles, and the two
South African sites are Soweto and Vulindlela. At Vulindlela, the CBVCT project, under the leadership of Professor Linda Richter,
will be nested within the other CAPRISA activities in the area. Read more.

Professor Salim Abdool Karim is Protocol Chair of HPTN 035, a
six country phase II/IIb microbicide trial involving over 3 000 women. Quarraisha Abdool Karim is an Executive Committee member
on the HPTN-Prevention Leadership Group and Chair of the HPTN Ethics Working Group. Professor Salim Abdool Karim, the co-chair
of HVTN 040 and HVTN 059, (phase I trial of the Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis replicon HIV vaccine trial). Salim Abdool Karim,
Clive Gray and Scott Hammer are actively involved in the HVTN activities, including HVTN 040 as well as in various other committees
within the HVTN aimed at building clinical trial research capacity.
