Dr Juliana McElrath

Juliana McElrath is a Professor in the Infectious Diseases Division, Department of Medicine, University of Washington (UW); and Member, Clinical Research Division, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC). She is Principal Investigator of the FHCRC/UW HIV-1 Vaccine Trials Unit; and Head of the Program in Infectious Diseases, at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

Dr. McElrath's clinical and research efforts for more than 17 years have focused on HIV-1 infection. Her contributions in the field of HIV-1 immunity and vaccine development have led to national recognition. Two accolades acknowledging these accomplishments include a NIH Merit Award for mucosal immunology studies received in 1997 and the Burroughs Wellcome Clinical Scientist Award in Translational Research in 2000.

Since 1998 Dr. McElrath has served as a regular member of the NIH AIDS Research and Related Studies 2 Study Section and is currently serving as chairman of this Study Section. She has participated in numerous ad hoc NIH review committees over the past 8 years. She has taken part in several NIH Organization of AIDS Research advisory committees and review panels related to vaccine development, HIV transmission, and Centers for AIDS Research, and have served as a member of the NIH-sponsored HIVNET Scientific Steering Committee. She is a also member of the NIH HIV Vaccine Resources Development Committee that provides recommendations for allocating large resources for institutional and industrial vaccine development. Additionally, she was an Associate Editor of the Journal of Infectious Diseases until 2002. Dr. McElrath has been an invited speaker at many national and international meetings and organized the 2002 HIV-1 Keystone Symposia.

   Dr. McElrath had major leadership responsibility in the NIH-supported multicenter AIDS Vaccine Evaluation Group (AVEG), serving as Chair of the Immunology Committee for a two-year term. When the organization transitioned to the HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN), she was selected as Chair of the Laboratory Sciences Committee and head of the mucosal working group. She is also a member of the HVTN Scientific Steering Committee.

In addition to her research studies, Dr. McElrath provides teaching services at the University of Washington and has attending responsibilities on the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Infectious Diseases consult service.
