| Hoosen Coovadia, MBBS, MD, is a paediatrician and expert in perinatal HIV transmission.
Dr. Coovadia was the Head of the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Natal until 2000, and is now the
Victor Daitz Professor for HIV/AIDS research at the University of Natal. He has made a substantial contribution
in paediatric diseases, including the definitive work on nephrosis in South African black children, malnutrition
and immunity, measles, particularly the effect of Vitamin A supplementation on children with measles and other infections. He is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking research in HIV/AIDS transmission from mother to child, especially through breastfeeding and is the Protocol Chair for HIVNET 023 and HPTN 046.

He is particularly committed to developing research capacity, having supervised over
40 postgraduate students and taught in the medical, nursing and allied health professions for more than 20 years.
He is also a Fellow of the University of Natal and was awarded the Star of South Africa by President Nelson Mandela
for his contribution to democracy in South Africa. In 1999, he was awarded the Silver Medal by the Medical Research
Council for his achievements in medical research.
