| Carolyn Williamson, PhD is a virologist and associate professor in the Institute for Infectious
Diseases and Molecular Medicine, University of Cape Town. She currently directs a molecular HIV research programme on HIV
diversity, pathogenesis and vaccine development. Her group was central to the initial elucidation of HIV-1 diversity in
South Africa and has collaborated nationally and internationally in programmes involved in vaccine design, development and
testing.

She is currently chair of the Biomedical and Clinical Sciences Working Group of the WHO / African AIDS Vaccine
Programme, is a principal investigator in the SAAVI funded project to development DNA subtype C vaccine for clinical trial
and is protocol chair of study based at the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA) which is
investigating clinical, immunological and virological characteristics in acute HIV-1 subtype C infection.
