| Alan Berkman, MD, (Columbia P&S) has had a long career in community medicine and was Medical Director
of Highbridge-Woodycrest Center, a 90-bed skilled nursing facility for adults and children with AIDS, for nine years. He completed
a post-doctoral fellowship in HIV prevention at the HIV Center for Clinical and Behavioral Studies at the NYS Psychiatric Institute
and Columbia University. Dr. Berkman has developed and tested behavioral interventions to prevent HIV and other STIs in men with
severe mental illness. In addition, he has developed a comprehensive program at Highbridge-Woodycrest for the care of patients
with both AIDS and severe mental illness. |

He has served as a consultant to the Directorate of Mental Health and Substance Abuse in South Africa
on matters relating to HIV and the mentally ill. Dr. Berkman has played a significant role in focusing increased attention on the
introduction of antiretroviral treatment in resource-limited settings. He currently serves as a consultant to the Secretariat of
the MTCT Plus Initiative.
